PEOPLE who deny that the early chapters of Genesis are historical sometimes make comments like this: “Genesis was written in a pre-scientific age for people who didn’t have the knowledge we now have about the world and universe. Science tells us that life evolved over many millions of years.”
GOD ‘COULDN’T INTERFERE’
There are two flaws in such a statement. Firstly, the Bible was written for people of every generation. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped.” (2 Timothy 3: 16-17). Secondly, “science” is all about things that can be observed, and no-one has ever observed true evolution. Secularists dismiss miracles as being anti-science. Professor Stephen Hawking arrogantly claims: “There could be no exceptions or miracles. Gods or demons couldn’t interfere in the running of the world”1
Even some Christians are uncomfortable with the idea that God intervenes to change the natural order of things. But to believe that God is somehow restricted in what He can do is to believe in a different “god” from what the Bible reveals. Famous Christian thinker C. S. Lewis wrote: “We who defend Christianity find ourselves constantly opposed not by the irreligion of our hearers but by their real religion… the popular ‘religion’ excludes miracles because it excludes the ‘living’ God of Christianity and believes instead in a kind of God who obviously would not do miracles, or indeed anything else.”2
POWER OVER NATURE
There is no good reason why anyone who believes in the God of the Bible, who revealed Himself in Jesus Christ, should have a problem with miracles. Jesus demonstrated His power over nature on many occasions. He stilled a violent storm at His word of command, turned water into wine, multiplied five loaves and two fishes into enough to feed 5,000 people, and raised a man called Lazarus to life after his body had started to decompose. These “creation miracles” clearly show that the One who designed the laws of nature is not bound by them.
The greatest miracle is surely is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Sceptics scoff, and sometimes demand scientific proof. However, the resurrection is not a matter of science, but history. All historical events are evaluated through the testimony of those who were there, and we have overwhelming evidence that Jesus was truly raised from the dead. “Science” may say that dead people don’t come back to life, but history tells us that 2,000 years ago one Person did, and the whole of Christianity hinges upon that fact.
THE GENESIS ‘PROBLEM’
Since all true Christians must believe in the resurrection, which is clearly supernatural, why do so many have a problem with Genesis? Why is it easier to believe that God used an inefficient, cruel evolutionary process, than to believe He created by His word of command? No scientist was there at the beginning, but God has given us an inspired record. Evolutionists believe that, given enough time, the impossible can happen, including molecules evolving into men. Scientifically, the impossible remains impossible; time makes no difference. The Bible says, “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command.” (Hebrews 11: 3.). To believe this is consistent with what God has revealed about Himself.
